This week started the wrong way. Some people started to create what is litterally a storm in the teacup, while some other people made announcements that in my view are extremely disappointing and quite concerning for some practitioners of FOSS licensing management and consultancy. Let me explain this point first.

Black Duck was awarded a patent on Open Source licensing conflict resolution. The patent itself seems to cover the “core technology” of the software developed by Black Duck, and not the actual practice of FOSS licensing management and optimization, which is something that Ars Aperta incidently offers both through its traditional services and certification programs. I have to say that I am not really sure what the patent covers or does not cover, but it sure brings a lot of fear, uncertainty and doubt for the existing competitors or potential competitors of Black Duck Software, existing consultancies in similar field and last but not least, customers. No wonder Bradley Kuhn got upset about this. I do find these news quite unsettling myself, and I cannot wait to see Black Duck’s patent promise. At least that should remind some not to trust so called Open Source experts who use laptops with Windows, MS Office and Internet Explorer. It’s a small but telling sign they treat FOSS as some sort of disease and not as something to rationally analyze and assist their customers on. And do I need to repeat this again here? Software patents are bad, they stifle competition, customer choice, block innovation and lessen value. You may call them a reality, you don’t have to necessarily add to it.

What really strikes me as a real storm in the tea-cup is the pseudo announcement that Ubuntu will drop Openoffice.org from its upcoming Lucid Lynx release, in its netbook edition. The news came from this website and got quickly picked out by the largest french newspaper, stirring quite an uproar among the French community.

Let me offer some thoughts on why these news are nothing short of non-news, aside the mere fact that there is no official announcement by Canonical or any Ubuntu release team on this matter.

First, OpenOffice.org is a large application that usually runs well even on netbooks, but may not be the best tailored tool for specific uses envisioned for netbook users. There is nothing surprising in this, and several Linux distributions have actually never included OpenOffice.org by default because of size constraints and simplicity.

Second, even if Ubuntu were to drop OpenOffice.org from its specific netbook edition it does not mean that the software would be unavailable from the very same Ubuntu repositories. In fact it would be readily available, but it just would not be included in the default installation. How many computers shipped with Windows only include a trial version of Microsoft Word and not a coherent MS Office stack? Almost all of them don’t ship with the full copy of MS Office.

Third, we recently got hold of the first reliable statistics, aside our own count of downloads, of the actual market share of OpenOffice.org on a worldwide scale. And guess what? With these numbers, we won’t be exactly hampered by whatever decision not to ship OpenOffice.org in the default install set of Ubuntu netbook edition.

What is now needed is some sort of acknowledgment by the broader community of analysts that these stats are reliable. This would cause some real problems to Microsoft, as these statistics usually only count the shipments or the default installation images of MS Windows that come preloaded with one trial version of MS Word. Unless Microsoft patents some new market share analysis method, that is.

nice things about web services (I suppose) is being able to watch your users,
and see what problems they hit, which bits they can't make work and
so on - to improve the product with.

Virtaal supports Haitian Creole through Machine Translation plugin

Update: Originally published on 2006-01-26 but somehow I didn't get this pushed on to the RSS feed so I've published it with a newer date.

Virtaal, a Computer Assisted Translation (CAT) tool, has been providing translators with Machine Translation suggestions through its plugin system. We've just committed a new Machine Translation plugin that allows Virtaal to use Microsoft Translator's new Haitian Creole translation engine.

The Microsoft Translator plugin has been waiting for the next major release as we didn't want to introduce any User Interface changes. But the usefulness of this tool in the current Haitian crisis means that we've released it so that people can use it and benefit from the feature.

How does this help?

Any software that needs to be localised into Haitian Creole can now be more easily translated in Virtaal with Haitian Machine Translation support.

Documents (OpenDocument Format and wiki texts) can be translated into Haitian Creole using Virtaal and the Translate Toolkit's txt2po and odf2xliff converters.

How do I use the plugin?

You have two options:

Windows: Download our special Virtaal .exe for Windows.

Linux: Copy the Microsoft Translator plugin into your plugin directory (on Linux this is /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/virtaal/plugins/tm/models/

How to use the plugin?

You'll need to define Haitian Creole as a language in Virtaal

Bottom Right > New Language Pair...

<img src="http://www.translate.org.za/blogs/dwayne/sites/translate.org.za.blogs.dwayne/files/new-language.png" alt="Bottom Right /> New Language Pair..." /> New Language Pair..." /> New Language Pair..." /> New Language Pair...">

Add Missing Language...

Name 'Haitian Creole' and language code 'ht'

This has nothing to do with OpenOffice.org directly, but it’s one of the most exciting open source projects I’ve heard about.

The OpenLuna Foundation seeks to return mankind to the lunar surface, first through robotic missions, followed by manned exploration, culminating in an eight person permanent outpost, and to do all of this in a way that it is accessible to everyone. Our research and technology will be open-source, we are privately funded, and one of our specific goals is to reach out to the community and educational systems to spread interest, enthusiasm, and involvement.

Yes, I joined, you bet. Makes me nostalgic for my NASA days, though of course that was government funding and got cut back. I’m an enthusiast for non-government projects and have been for many years.

The heading seems to be a bit cryptic, isn't it? It is about the "Community Council Face-To-Face Meeting in Hamburg".

We, the Community Council, had the chance to meet each other in the real world. Two days to catch up with all the tiny bits and pieces which are sometimes so incredibly difficult to discuss - mainly via IRC and in parallel with the "competing" usual project work.

The folks at the Hamburg office offered a warm welcome - many thanks to Jürgen and the members of the Team OpenOffice.org e. V. who cared about our creature comforts.

This is how the participants looked like - just a snapshot since we missed any opportunity to posture ...

There were some interesting information and sometimes even strong discussions. Hardly surprising, since each of the council members has a certain viewpoint. As you may know, each of the members is elected by a special constituency, so that the person can represent the interests of a certain group in our whole community.

Besides he official discussion there were - maybe even more important - the lesser official discussions until late in the night. I can just repeat my request to everyone to use any chance to attend such a local meeting or even conference ... :-)

Here is a picture of what happened with the results ... aehm ... the media which was used to collect the results.

You may take the chance to have a look at the draft minutes John was so kind to prepare. Most probably, there will be some more information in the near future. Until then we have some more Action Items which have to be resolved ... let's go!

That's it - many thanks to all the people who were directly and indirectly involved!

Christoph

I’m happy to announce OpenOffice.org 3.2 rc5 packages for openSUSE. They are available in the Build Service OpenOffice:org:UNSTABLE project and include many upstream and Go-oo fixes. See also overview of integrated features and enhancements. Please, look for more details about the openSUSE OOo build on the wiki page.

The packages are release candidates. Though, they have not passed the full QA test and might still include even serious bugs. Therefore they are not intended for data-critical usage. A good practice is to archive any important data before an use, …

As usual, we kindly ask any interested beta testers to try the package and report bugs. See also the list of known bugs.

Other information and plans:

There were more blocker bugs in the rc4, so we needed to release rc5 in the end. The good news is that no new blocker bug has been reported last few days. If nothing bad happen with the next few days, rc5 will be final and I will put it to the OpenOffice:org:STABLE project by the end of this week. Please, keep your fingers crossed

Currently, extensions programmers have no access to the deployment
process of an extension. With CWS tkr35 the new interface
XDeploymentHooks was introduced. An extension programmer may uses this
interface to get a notification and execute custom code during the deployment and undeployment
process.

To activate the deployment hooks simple add the
<deploymentHook>-Tag to your description.xml. The tag contains
the service name of the XDeploymentHooks implementation.

Amused by Tanenbaum's talk on reliable software, if not
completely convinced. It is highly unclear to me that re-starting
apparently AWOL individual components will lead to a more reliable
system overall, on the other hand - isolation of low-quality third
party drivers seems obviously good.

I missed last year's but was here two years ago, in Brussels, during winter, only without the broken hip. Fosdem is intense, exciting, great. The focus is on presentations, dsicussions that have an effect, that are not just speeches. In our case, this means the OOo developers present (and there are a lot) are going around meeting others and discussing OOo's technology and file format (the ODF) and how to contribute. (Today there is also a meeting of the ODF crew at 14:00, which I will be participating in. And that field--the ODF--is also immensely interesting.)

More later.....

Oh, cool data--so cool I wonder how much we can believe it.

See: http://www.webmasterpro.de/portal/news/2010/02/05/international-openoffice-market-shares.html

In the Go-oo team, we wanted to refactor some toolbar popups to tend to some general look. The following screenshots give a good idea of the differences between those popups.

Then I changed the popup windows by something looking more like the third of the above screenshots. For some popups I even removed the menu to use normal dialog controls: the effect was pretty awful with the OpenSuse 11.2 default GTK theme (with black menus). Here are some screenshots to better realize what has changed, though there are other refactored popups…

Calc function to convert numbers to words (for Russian, Ukrainian, Belarussian languages only).

One of the evil tricks we used to play as kids was “sending someone to Coventry” – refusing to speak to them – a juvenile form of solitary confinement. Since moving house three weeks ago, I have been without broadband, and feel as if I have been “sent to Coventry” as far as taking part in OpenOffice.org activities is concerned. The Oracle / Sun acquisition has gone through and I haven’t seen a single one of the key webcasts … various release candidates have been issued and superceded and I haven’t been able to download one of them … I’m in a vacuum!

So today I find myself in a hotel in Hamburg enjoying free wifi access, after a day in a real (not just virtual) Community Council meeting. More on that tomorrow (it’s past my bedtime now ) but I would just like to pay tribute to the large number of OpenOffice.org volunteers who do not have broadband access at all, but who pay such a vital part in the Community. How they manage to do localisations, QA new releases, man support forums etc without broadband – I just can’t imagine it. You are amazing – I salute you!

Translate Toolkit - a powerful localisation toolkit

What did it take to allow Pootle, our web-based localisation platform to support Qt Linguist (.ts), TMX and TBX formats?

Three lines of code!

Pootle uses the Translate Toolkit which Translate.org.za has developed since 2002 to provide a powerful set of tools to manipulate localisation files. The Toolkit has evolved and grown as our needs have changed and as we began to localise other applications like Mozilla Firefox and OpenOffice.org.

The toolkit has the concept of a localisation base class from which all our localisation file implementations derive. We use the base class within Pootle to access XLIFF and PO files. We were pretty sure we'd be able to support other bilingual files (localisation files with both the source and target language in one file) in Pootle but we didn't think it would be this easy.

Of course we'd like to make some further changes so that Pootle simply supports any bilingual file store from the Translate Toolkit and we'll need to test Pootle running with this new feature, expect a beta soon.

Now you might be wondering about monolingual files (localisation files with just one language stored in the file e.g. Java properties files). Well we're busy looking at those and hopefully with the next release of Pootle we'll be able to directly translate monolingual files. Have a look at our list of currently supported localisation files and start dreaming about what will be possible.

For software and content developers the exciting new is this. You want to localise your esoteric format in Pootle? Simply write a storage class for the Translate Toolkit and you will automatically have support within Pootle for your format.

Update: Just before publishing this blog post the Translate Toolkit development list got news of a new Gettext PO diffing tool that uses... the Translate Toolkit of course.
